TWO innocent Jumma villagers have been kidnapped and 7 others tortured in Belaichari under Rangamati district, a press release said.
The incident occurred on Monday night, 21 March. According to UPDF, the kidnapped are Nango Chakma, 50, son of Surojoy Chakma and Dhenga Chakma, 38, son of Pukko Chakma.
A group of 12 – 15 armed men led by Pramesh Chakma, a Santu loyalist, kidnapped Nango Chakma, the Karbari or village chief of Kangarachari from his home and Dhenga Chakma from a house of his relative in Shamukchari village.
The armed men also beat up seven villagers. They are Buro Chakma, 18, son of Ananda Chakma; Mujib chakma, 19, son of Hidinath Chakma; Modon Chakma, 20, son of Tongi Chakma; Kalaya Chakma, 21, son of Thudo Chakma; Morodcha Chakma, 22, son of Bhabo Chakma; Jotil Chakma, 24, son of Biro Lal Chakma; and Bhutto Chakma, 18, sonf of Kamo Dev Chakma.
They were catching fish with nets when the armed gang came and tortured them. The Santu men also snatched away Taka 7,500 and a mobile hand set from Ranga Chitti Chakma, a local shopkeeper.
UPDF leader Shanti Dev Chakma has condemned the incident and urged the Santu group to release the abducted villagers immediately.
He said, “The Santu group has degenerated into an armed gang whose motto is murder, kidnapping, terrorism and extortion. It is now engaged in destructive activities harmful to the interest of the Jumma people.”
“Therefore, it has become an important duty for every patriot to resist Santu group” he added.
